Woman Helps Wheelchair Duo Finish New York City Marathon After Wheel Breaks

A Maryland runner recently helped push a man in a wheelchair to the finish line in the New York City Marathon.

Amy Downes, 40, of Frederick helped Brent Pease push his brother, Kyle Pease, in the marathon on Nov. 1, according to The Frederick News-Post. The brothers have completed many races together, with Brent pushing Kyle.

About 12 miles into the race, the chair's left rear wheel disintegrated. Police officers escorted the brothers to a local bike shop, where the left axle was tied to Brent's shoulder to allow him to push on the remaining two wheels. The brothers resumed the race, but realized it was nearly impossible to make turns.

Downes, who was also running in the race, soon spotted the pair and offered to help.

Another runner joined shortly thereafter. The foursome finished the race about seven hours later.
