A knife linked to O.J. Simpson’s property and handed over to the Los Angeles Police Department last month was not used in the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, LAPD confirmed Friday afternoon.
Sources had previously told NBC News that it was likely not the murder weapon, and forensic tests have confirmed that belief.
The weapon, described as a buck knife, was reportedly given to now-retired officer George Maycott when he was working security on a film shoot near the former Simpson property in 2003. A construction worker apparently discovered the knife while doing work on the Brentwood estate after it no longer belonged to Simpson.
Attorney Trent Copeland said the officer had tried to turn it in to LAPD’s West Division, but was told the case was closed and to not bring in the knife.
O.J. Simpson was acquitted of murder charges in the death of his ex-wife and her friend.
