Drones Flew Dangerously Close to Planes Flying Into LaGuardia: Report

Police are looking for the operators of two drones that flew dangerously close to planes preparing to land at LaGuardia Airport in July, according to a published report.

Pilots spotted the drones above downtown Brooklyn, about 12 miles from the airport, on the evenings of July 27 and July 29, the New York Post reports.

One of the drones flew just underneath a Piedmont Airlines flight as it was making its final approach into LaGuardia, the Post said. The other drone was seen flying towards a US Airways flight flying at 4,500 feet.

The sightings were reported to the NYPD’s Aviation Unit, but police were unable to locate the drones or their operators.

“Anything that causes the crew to divert its attention away from a safe landing is a serious distraction,” a law enforcement source told the Post.

Earlier this month, two men were arrested for allegedly flying drones around lower Manhattan and near the site of the US Open.
