Calif. Man Acquitted of Murder After 19 Years in Prison

After 19 years behind bars, a California man walked free on Monday after a jury acquitted him Monday for a murder he didn't commit, NBC News reported.

Richard Alex Williams was imprisoned on a life sentence for the fatal 1996 shooting of a driver who was gunned down by someone in a green Mustang in south Sacramento.

But Williams, who is black, fought for a new trial, getting one after a federal judge found prosecutors had removed a potential juror, a black woman, from the jury due to her race.

Williams was only 18 when he went into prison. Now 37, he presented his own closing arguments at the new trial on Monday, according to his attorney.

"I just poured my heart out to the jury and told them the truth and they heard it," Williams told NBC affiliate KCRA.
