Woman Dies, Struck by Friend Backing Out of Parking Lot

The victim, an 83-year-old woman using a walker, approached the vehicle while it was moving, California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

A woman died Wednesday after she was run over while her friend backed out of a San Marcos apartment complex parking space.

The incident happened at approximately 5:50 a.m. at Chateau Lake San Marcos Retirement Community on Circa del Lago.

The victim, an 83-year-old woman using a walker, approached the vehicle while it was moving, California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

The driver, an 83-year-old Lake San Marcos resident, had instructed the woman to wait by the curb while he backed out of his space.

Bettencourt said it appears there may have been some confusion.

"Unfortunately the driver backed up over the female," Bettencourt said.

The driver was able to remove the woman from under the vehicle and help her while security guards called 911.

Emergency personnel responded and transported the woman to Palomar Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

CHP will investigate the cause of the crash.

“As of right now it seems like a very tragic collision,” Bettencourt said.

He did not have any details on the woman’s medical condition prior to the collision.
