Secretary of State John Kerry Starts Physical Therapy After Broken Leg Surgery

Secretary of State John Kerry has begun physical therapy as he recovers from surgery to his broken leg but his return to work in Washington remains unclear.

The State Department said Wednesday that Kerry "was up and out of bed" at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston a day after the four-hour operation on his right femur that was conducted under a regional anesthetic. However, spokeswoman Marie Harf said it wasn't yet clear when Kerry would leave the hospital or resume a full schedule.

Kerry's surgeon said Tuesday that the fracture was fully repaired and that the injury is not expected to interfere with his duties. Kerry broke his leg on Sunday in France at the start of a ride when he struck a curb in a parking lot and fell.
