‘He Was Not Invited': Skokie Homeowner Finds Man Holding Baby in Garage

An Illinois homeowner made an unusual discovery in his garage.

Skokie, Ill. homeowner Vincent Giovannone said he installed an elaborate home security system after his neighbor had his cab stolen. The cameras captured a man breaking in around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday with a baby in hand.

“I don’t know what he was up to but he was not invited,” Giovannone said. “My guess is that he broke into the garage to try and hide from police.”

The video shows the man entering trying to disable the cameras by pulling out wires that were attached to the lights.

It also shows the garage door opening and the man walking toward Giovannone’s car to explain himself. The conversation was captured on the cameras.

Giovannone said he was “smiling at me as if he was supposed to be there.”

“Good trick, but I am not about to fall for that,” Giovannone said. The intruder apologized and said “he was just walking through.”

Giovannone replied "you are walking through my garage, that doesn’t happen.”

The man fled the scene and Giovannone said he followed him, but stopped because he feared that he might slip on ice and hurt the baby. The homeowner also said nothing was stolen from his garage.

“A lot of people can’t believe I chased after the guy,” Giovannone said. “Some other people were wishing I had a gun. I don’t know that I necessarily agree with them because his M.O. is he runs.”

However, the suspect came back, pleading with Giovannone not to call police. He told him to leave his property.

“The nice thing was that I was able to pull up the video immediately and show it to the police and they are like ‘yeah, we know that guy’,” Giovannone said.

Skokie police are still investigating the incident and its possible link to an earlier domestic disturbance call. No charges have been filed.
