Police said a homeowner shot and killed a 38-year-old man believed to have mistakenly broken into a home near Beaumont, close to Texas' Gulf Coast.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Thursday that police responding at about 3 a.m. identified the victim as William Bloomer. He had been shot and killed by a homeowner with a handgun on Sawmill Road in Vidor.

Witnesses said Bloomer had become intoxicated at nearby party and left on foot. He subsequently forced his way into the Sawmill Road home.

Detectives believe Bloomer was so intoxicated that he broke into the home mistakenly believing someone he knew lived there. The homeowner didn't know Bloomer and shot him as an intruder.

The investigation is ongoing, but no charges have yet been filed against the homeowner.
