Six people were rescued when a U.S. Navy vessel hit rough waters on a training mission off the California coast Thursday.
U.S. Coast Guard crews heard the mayday call from the vessel about 10 miles off the coast of San Clemente at approximately 2:30 a.m.
Two people on board suffered facial lacerations and called for help.
The USCG took the call and had units on standby to assist the Navy if needed but the Navy sent another vessel nearby to respond.
The vessel was from the guided missile destroyer USS Spruance which is homeported in San Diego.
The vessel never made it back to San Diego. The Navy ultimately towed by the vessel to Horse Shoe Cove on San Clemente Island.
