Plane Windshield Cracks When Delta Flight From NY to Tenn. Hits Bird

A plane flying from New York to Tennessee made an emergency landing in West Virginia after striking a bird, officials said.

The 57 passengers on the Delta flight had an unexpected layover Thursday at Charleston's Yeager Airport, according to the airport.

The aircraft was headed to Nashville, Tennessee, from New York's LaGuardia Airport.

The pilot told air traffic controllers they were going to make an emergency landing at 4:50 p.m. after a bird struck the plane, according to airport spokesman Mike Plante.

When the bird hit the plane, it cracked the windshield, officials said. The aircraft landed without incident. No injuries were reported.

Delta it sent a new plane to bring passengers to Nashville, the airline said in a statement Friday morning. The replacement flight landed safely later that evening.

The airline would only call the incident a "maintenance issue" and said ""the safety of our customers and crew members is always Delta’s top priority."
