Facebook Newswire Aims to Help Reporters

Facebook launched FB Newswire Thursday, a new tool that will give reporters an aggregator of verified and newsworthy content that can be used for breaking news stories.

Facebook has partnered with News Corp-owned Storyful and will give journalists a database of news content that's already been vetted (as part of Storyful's primary reason for existing) and make Facebook a resource for them, according to TechCrunch. The content will be collected from Facebook users via their accounts, and gives Facebook more clout as a source for news.

The added value for journalists is that content found on the FB Newswire feed will already be verified, so reporters won't have worry if they cite the stories in their news reports. FB Newswire can be accessed at Facebook.com/FBNewswire or on Twitter at @FBNewswire.

We're not sure if FB Newswire will be supplementing anyone's reporting, but it's a nice thing to have for Facebook users who want a little world news. A look at FB Newswire shows a hodgepodge of stories on Indian elections, the anniversary of the 1915 Armenian genocide and a lawsuit against the University of Windsor. So far, the news doesn't seem to be localized. Once that happens, then the feature may be a gamechanger.
