Free iPhones? If Rumors Hold True…

Wouldn't be a (pick a day) without a new Apple rumor. Now that Apple has officially closed the markets as the most-valued company in the world, maybe they'll give away iPhones?

A potential "iCloud Phone" has been rumored, at Silicon Alley Insider, to be on the block and offerable for free -- with a carrier subsidy.

Apple is reportedly trying to cut production costs to $400, keeping pace with the lower-end of the smartphone market. That's the end of the market that Android is ever-increasing its share, of course.

The iCloud should be released simultaneous with the iPhone 4. The iCloud could showcase iOS 5, according to applenapps.com's Trevor Sheridan.

Sheridan reports that Apple is planning a special event to launch the new phones, but no firm date has been set.
