Automatic gunfire was heard on Monday in the French city of Marseille, triggering a large police response in a nation still reeling from deadly terror attacks, NBC News reported. It was not immediately clear if the shooting — which took place in a neighborhood known for drug trafficking — was terrorism related. The Marseille Police Department said the incident in a low-income housing project was still ongoing and that elite officers from the national police were were on the scene. There were no immediate reports of injuries. France has been on high alert since the deadly terror attacks in Paris last month which left 20 people dead — including three gunmen.
