NYC Man Arrested in NJ With Van Full of Fireworks

Police in New Jersey say 39 cases of illegal fireworks have been recovered during a traffic stop.

A spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police department says 48-year-old Robert A. Schmidt of Staten Island was arrested Tuesday after the rental van he was driving was stopped by police in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Spokesman Joe Pentangelo says Schmidt granted Port Authority police permission to search the van's cargo area, where the cases of fireworks were discovered.

He faces a disorderly persons charge and charges related to possessing prohibited fireworks.

It is not immediately known if he has an attorney.
