Jennifer Aniston to Play Country Singer

It looks like even Jennifer Aniston has gotten sick of romantic comedies. As the sandy-colored star promoted her self-titled fragrance in Mexico City this week, she talked about her latest project, country musical "The Goree Girls." Perhaps taking a cue from Gwyneth Paltrow's "Country Strong," Aniston is producing and starring in the true story of an all-female country western band formed at a Texas prison in the 1940s.

"The Goree Girls were "sort of the Dixie Chicks of their time," Aniston said.

The film was inspired by a 2003 article in "Texas Monthly" about the largely forgotten country act.

Aniston will be joined by ex-Destiny's Child chanteuse Kelly Rowland, and "Grey's Anatomy" stars Sandra Oh and Ellen Pompeo, according to Popeater.com.

"The Goree Girls" won't be Aniston's first production credit. She was an executive producer of pregnancy farce "The Switch," Steve Zahn comedy "Management," and the little-known "Becoming Icizzle," about a suburbanite with a rap star alter ego, according to IMDB.

Aniston tested her Southern accent in a 2004 "Saturday Night Live" spoof of "the greatest female vocalists ever to stand in front of wood paneling and sing."

"I've been hearing all around town that you've been loving my man / Well, I'll crack your jaw with a baseball bat / throw you in a garbage can," Aniston snarled, wearing a giant curly wig.

Aniston carried a tune on air again in September 2009, when Ellen DeGeneres put her on the spot on her show. Aniston thinly warbled a verse of "I've Got a Crush on You" and then covered her face with her hair.

"I'm absolutely mortified that you actually did that to me," she said. Then-"American Idol" judge DeGeneres reassured her, "I would put you through to the next round!"
