Katie Holmes Opens Up About New Life With Suri Cruise: “New York Has Been Very Good to Both of Us”

It's Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise against the world.

Since ending her marriage to Tom Cruise in the summer of 2012, Holmes has been living in a $12,500-a-month apartment in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood. The actress' 7-year-old daughter currently attends a posh private school, and 35-year-old Holmes briefly appeared on Broadway. In a way, relocating from California to the Empire State has given the mother-daughter duo a fresh start.

"New York has been very good to both of us," Holmes tells People of their new life together in NYC. "I love the theater, the galleries in my neighborhood. Stuff [like] that is so much of what makes me love this city. I love the Knicks. I love talking to my neighbors in the elevator. I like feeling a part of something big."

The Ohio native feels at home in the Big Apple, where she's often seen at SoulCycle and Whole Foods. "I love the community in New York. I love New Yorkers. I ran into someone on the street the other day that I went to high school with," Holmes says. "I love the moments of spontaneity every day."

When she's not busy taking care of her little girl or working on her acting career, Holmes champions causes close to her heart. The single star has teamed up with Kohl's to encourage women to have conversations about breast health and address what she calls the "pink elephant in the room."

"Women have so much going on in their day-to-day lives, it can be easy to ignore their own needs, like scheduling a mammogram or routine screening," she tells E! News. "I'm honored to team up with Kohl's to remind women of the importance of having a conversation about breast health right now."

Through Saturday, March 8, Kohl's will donate $1 to breast cancer organization Susan G. Komen for every pink Kohl's Cash coupon redeemed, for a $100,000 minimum and a $1 million maximum total.

Kohl's is also selling pink elephant necklaces from the LC Lauren Conrad line, with 100 percent of the proceeds going toward the fight against breast cancer through Kohl's Cares, its philanthropic platform.

"I've known a lot of people who have been diagnosed and women tend to take care of everyone else before our own needs. Becoming a parent made me much more aware of my own health. I want to be there for my child for a long time," Holmes tells People. "[Breast cancer] affects one in eight women, and anything I can do to help, I'm on board with."
