Karzai Demands U.S. Hasten Afghanistan Withdrawal

Afghan President Hamid Karzai slammed recent photos of U.S. soldiers posing with dead suicide bombers' limbs and demanded Thursday that U.S. forces hand over all power to Afghan troops sooner than planned. "It is such a disgusting act to take photos with body parts and then share it with others," Karzai said in a statement issued to NBC News. He said that in light of other recent incidents — most recently, the massacre of 17 Afghan civilians allegedly by a U.S. staff sergeant — "the only way to put an end to such painful experiences is through an accelerated and full transition of security responsibilities to Afghan forces." U.S. military and civilian leaders have already condemned the photos, which were apparently taken in 2010 and published this week in the Los Angeles Times.
