Robert De Niro to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award at Globes

Yep -- they're talking to him

Robert De Niro made his mark playing outcasts and misfits, but at January's Golden Globe Awards he'll receive the ultimate insider's honor.

De Niro will be given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the Globes, Kevin Spacey revealed at a press conference today. It will be De Niro's second Globe award -- he previously won a best actor nod for his turn as boxing star Jake LaMotta in Martin Scorcese's "Raging Bull."

The actor, who has stunned and seduced audiences for his immersive approach in such films as "Taxi Driver," "Goodfellas," and "The Godfather: Part II," has also earned two Academy Awards (for "Bull" and "Godfather II") over a career that stretches back to the mid-1960s.

In the past, the lifetime achievement award has gone to such Hollywood heavyweights as Al Pacino, Steven Spielberg, Barbra Streisand and Scorsese, himself.

De Niro can expect a gentle ribbing from the host of the Globes -- Ricky Gervais is reprising hosting duties for a second straight year. Gervais appeared to be drinking a glass of beer at one point during this year's Globes and mercilessly skewered the biggest of stars, including Sir Paul McCartney.

It will be interesting to see how he handles the man who played Travis Bickle on De Niro's big night.
