Former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate George McGovern, whose health has been deteriorating over recent months, is no longer responsive, his family said in a statement. "He is surrounded by his loving family and close friends," in a hospice facility in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the statement said. "...The family would like to thank everyone for the care and compassion shown during this time." Before being admitted to hospice "with a combination of medical conditions, due to age,"according to the statement, the 90-year-old spent the last three decades devoted to fighting world hunger. He entered national politics in 1957, serving as a Congressman until 1961 before being moving on to the U.S. Senate from 1963 to 1981. He lost his bid for the presidency in 1972 to Richard Nixon and became a leader of the Democratic Party's liberal wing.
