Blocked! Board Stops Parent Trigger in Compton

The Compton school board denied a petition by parents at McKinley Elementary to have the school turned into a charter school. The parent petition was the first under the state's new and controversial "parent trigger" law that permits parents to demand the reconstitution of failing schools.

The board's denial was based on what they said were technical defects with the petition, including a typo. But given the district's efforts to block the parents through all sorts of underhanded tactics (which are the subject of a lawsuit), the denial is likely to make a hot fight even hotter.
