An elderly man was struck and killed by a vehicle Sunday morning, causing the partial closure of a major road a couple of miles north of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, police said.

The crash was reported just before 6 a.m. on Monroe Street near Requa Avenue, just north of Interstate 10, according to the Indio Police Department.

The victim was not in a crosswalk when he was hit, and the driver, described only as a woman, remained at the scene and cooperated with officers, the department said.

Drugs or alcohol were not suspected to have played a factor in the crash, and none of the people involved were attending the music festival, police said.

The northbound lanes of Monroe Street were closed for hours for the death investigation.

The victim's identity was not made public.
