“Stuck Waiting”: Court's Move Won't Affect Couples in 20 States

Some say the Supreme Court isn't finished yet, as same-sex couples in some 20 states still live under gay marriage bans and will get no benefit from the court's move Monday to decline a handful of appeals. Couples living in the states unaffected by the order will be “stuck waiting,” said Naomi Goldberg, a policy specialist at Movement Advancement Project. But legal scholars say Monday's ruling proves there is hope. More than 80 cases have been filed challenging the state marriage bans since the Supreme Court's landmark rulings last year, in which it struck down the federal law barring recognition of same-sex marriages.
