A 22-year-old Stanton man pleaded guilty Thursday and was immediately sentenced to nearly six years in jail for a slashing attack on his parents, teenage sister and live-in girlfriend.
Thomas Oakland Kuranda pleaded guilty to attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, both felonies, and misdemeanor counts of assault with a deadly weapon, corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, and criminal threats.
Kuranda was sentenced to 2,184 days in jail and placed on five years of formal probation as well as ordered to participate in a batters' treatment program, according to court records.
Kuranda has been in custody since last September. Deputies were called about 12:50 a.m. on Sept. 28, 2018, to the 11100 block of Irwin Drive and found the three injured family members, along with the suspect's girlfriend, who had a facial wound, according to Carrie Braun of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
"The attacker's 53-year-old father was the most severely injured, and the other three were treated for "mild to moderate injuries," Braun said, adding that none of the injuries were considered life-threatening at the time.
Kuranda got into an argument with his relatives that escalated into a physical conflict, in which he allegedly used some sort of a blade, like a box cutter, to slash his father, 57-year-old mother and 14-year-old sister, Braun said.
