Suspect Identified in Brutal Beating of San Pedro High School Baseball Player

The beating left the 15-year-old victim breathing through a ventilator.

Officials have identified a suspect in the brutal beating of a San Pedro High School baseball player in March.

Jaymel Williams, 20, of San Pedro has been a person of interest since the early stages of the investigation into the case, Lomita Sheriff's Station Capt. Dan Beringer said in a Tuesday press release.

The incident occurred on the evening of March 30 when Evan Jimenez, 15, was attacked in an alley by two men as he was heading home from a friend's house after a baseball game.

Jimenez was beaten with bottles and choked, according to authorities. He was initially left breathing through a ventilator.

Jimenez has since been released from the hospital and is healing at home, Beringer said.

Williams faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon, said Lomita Sheriff's Station Sgt. Thomas Anderson.

He is currently booked into a "custody facility" in a neighboring county for unrelated charges, Beringer said.

Another man is also considered a person of interest, but has not been charged.
