2011 Emmy Nominations: “Mad Men” & “Modern Family” Shine

The 2011 Emmy Awards will be all about domestic turmoil, with favorites "Modern Family" and "The Good Wife" dominating the major categories.  But overall, "Mad Men," gets the honor of garnering the most overall nominations -- 19 -- among regular television series.

The HBO miniseries, "Mildred Pierce" took 21 nominations.

"Fringe" star Joshua Jackson and Melissa McCarthy of "Mike & Molly" read the official list of nominees this morning, and the field was much more eclectic than previous years. Upstart shows like HBO's sword and sorcery epic "Game of Thrones," AMC's murder mystery "The Killing," and FX's rugged cop drama "Justified" all muscled their way in to make this year at least a little tougher to call.

However, with ABC's mock-doc comedy "Modern Family" refusing to nominate anyone as a lead (they consider it an ensemble), the show pretty much dominated the supporting categories in comedy (six of the 12 nominations in the Supporting Actor/Actress category are "MF" peeps), while CBS's politically-themed drama "The Good Wife" scored six nominations across the Drama categories.

"Friday Night Lights," whose final episode will air on NBC Friday,  scored a nostalgic three noms for acting and series.

But that show will be up against AMC's "Mad Men," which is looking for its fourth win in a row for Best Drama.

Perhaps the biggest surprise? No nomination for Kyra Sedgwick in her final season of the TNT cop drama "The Closer." But at least NBC's "The Office" star Steve Carell gets one last chance to win a Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Emmy for his role as Michael Scott, the frenetic manager of a paper company office.

Oh, and the much-maligned miniseries "The Kennedys," which almost didn't even air before an eleventh hour save by the Reelz Channel, managed to get recognized in the form of acting noms for leads Greg Kinnear and Barry Pepper.

The Emmys will be broadcast Sept. 18 on Fox.
