Vintage Vroom: Historic Race Cars in Fontana

Eye dozens of fast cars hailing from 1921 through 1961.

WHILE AUTO GATHERINGS... quite often rum the gamut, in terms of the kinds of cars and trucks on display, some spectaculars take a more singular focus. Look to the Cars & Carriages exhibit in Oxnard, which gives the spotlight to French coachbuilders of the 1900s, and look to the Annual Vintage Trailer Rally, which pops up along the Central Coast with several gleaming Airstreams in tow (as well as other trailer makes). Another car happening is zooming into the area, at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, a place which should reveal the happening's theme: vintage speedsters of all sorts. The Southern California Historic Sports Car Festival is a three-day party that's all about the vehicles that laid down rubber over several decades, stretching back to the very early days of racing.

SO WHAT CARS WILL SHOW? So very many, including "(s)tock race cars, Formula and Indy cars from all eras..." There'll be a celebration of 100 Years of BMW, as well as "100 Years of Indy," so look for "Indy cars from 1921-1961 driving the oval." The racers won't all be on the move, however; you'll have a chance to look at the historic automobiles, too, when they come to a stop. A car show, car club corrals, and other areas devoted to lingering before these on-the-move artworks are part of the weekend event, and "(s)pectators are welcome in the paddock and garage area to see the cars and talk with the owners and drivers."

AS FOR THE DATES? Prepare to see track history in full bloom from Friday, April 29 through May 1.
