Surveillance Captures Family's SUV Flipping as Police Search for Hit-and-Run Driver

A man can be seen running from one of the vehicles after the crash on a Wilmington street

Surveillance footage captured a hit-and-run crash that forced a family of five's SUV to flip Wednesday.

The collision occurred about 1:45 p.m. in the area Gulf Avenue and Opp Street, authorities said.

The officer had tried to pull the driver over at or near the intersection of Anaheim Street and Gulf Avenue for failing to come to a full stop at a stop sign, according to port spokeswoman Rachel Campbell, who said the officer was not chasing the car when the crash occurred.

The man abandoned the pickup and fled on foot after the collision and was being sought, she said.

A woman about 50 years old and a second adult who were in the vehicle that was struck sustained minor injuries and were taken to a hospital, Port Police Deputy Chief Randy Allen told a reporter at the scene.

Three children, all believed to be under the age of 10, were in the vehicle with their adult family members but were not injured, Allen said.

A description of the hit-and-run driver was not immediately available.
