United States' Aria Fischer, left, and China's Huanhuan Ma, right, fight for the ball during their women's water polo preliminary round match at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016.

The U.S. women’s water polo team, the reigning Olympic champions, beat China 12-4 thanks to four goals from Danville native and Stanford University star Maggie Steffens.

Thursday's win follows a decisive 11-4 win over Spain on Tuesday.

The team, which features Princeton goalie Ashleigh Johnson and a total of six athletes with Bay Area ties, is attempting to become the first women’s water polo team in Olympic history to win back-to-back gold medals.

If the matched against Spain and China were any indication, the team remains focused on that objective, as the U.S. got goals from 8 of their 11 position players, including six different players in the first half.
