The San Francisco 49ers stocked the competition in their offensive backfield Saturday morning by selecting Mississippi State running back Anthony Dixon with the No. 173 overall pick in the NFL draft.

Dixon is the first of San Francisco's three picks in the sixth round. The 49ers were looking for a running back in the draft to compete for playing time behind Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore, and Dixon will challenge Glen Coffee to get the bulk of carries that don't go to Gore.

Considered one of the best power backs in the nation last year, the 233-pound Dixon was a workhorse at Mississippi State who led the Southeastern Conference in rushing last season as a senior with a school-record 1,391 yards.
