49ers Talk NFC West Race

Niners at 5-8 with three games remaining

Even with a 5-8 record, the 49ers are the best in the NFC West when it comes to beating the division.

They are 3-1 thus far against teams in the division after beating the Seahawks at Candlestick on Sunday.

In this NBC Bay Area Sports video clip, 49ers players Brian Westbrook, Alex Smith, Vernon Davis, Patrick Willis and head coach Mike Singletary talk about how the 40-21 win over Seattle keeps them right in the NFC West race.

Here’s where the NFC West stands: both Seattle and St. Louis are tied for the lead at 6-7 with San Francisco a game back at 5-8. Arizona beat Denver on Sunday, and considering tiebreakers, the Cardinals are mathematically out of the playoff picture at 4-9.

The 49ers play at San Diego on Thursday. On Sunday, December 26, the Niners visit St. Louis before closing out the regular season after New Year’s Day on January 2, at Candlestick versus Arizona.

As crazy as it seems, even for a team that started the season at 0-5, don’t rule out the Niners perhaps winning the division with a 7-9 record. Tiebreakers will help this effort as long as they keep winning within the division.
