San Franciscans may be thrilled that Dwight Clark is returning to the 49ers in a front office consultant position.
San Franciscans may be less thrilled that a substantial portion of his job description is "the new stadium sales effort".
The 49ers announced on their web site that Clark would be re-joining the team as a business operations consultant. Clark was the 49ers' General Manager for the 1998 season, and also made a somewhat well-known touchdown catch during his nine-year tenure as a 49ers wide receiver.
According to the Niners' press release, in his new incarnation Clark "will focus on special projects relating to sponsorship development, corporate hospitality, community investment, premium seating and the new stadium sales effort." Man, if my job description was that vague, I would spend a lot of time at work surfing the internet.
"I am extremely excited and grateful to the 49ers organization for giving me the opportunity to once again be a part of the 49ers family,” Clark said in the press release. “The franchise is most definitely pointed in the right direction. I look forward to every contribution I can make on the business side.”
Clark's number 87 was retired by the 49ers, but Dwight Clark can't seem to retire from the 49ers.
