Cal Suspends Starter on Eve of Tourney

On the eve of the NCAA tournament a potentially scandalous story is coming from Cal.

Coach Mike Montgomery suspended one of the team's starting players.

The university announced Wednesday Omondi Amoke has been suspended indefinitely for a "violation of team rules."

This would not happen unless there was a serious infraction.

Amoke did not even make the trip to Florida with the team.

There is all sorts of speculation on the story behind the suspension, but for now the team and the school are not commenting.

Amoke is a 20-year-old sophomore who moved into the starting lineup late in the season and started 14 games. He was averaging 4.8 points and 4.6 rebounds.

Cal plays Louisville tomorrow night.

There is a pre-game news conference in Jacksonville that will feature Montgomery Thursday.  We'll see if anything comes from that.

NBC Bay Area is also on campus today to see if we can confirm anything.

As they say in television newscasts: stay tuned.
