Freshly Cut 49er May Catch On with Raiders

Wide receiver Brandon Jones must not have been too popular with San Francisco 49ers coaching staff. They cut the sixth-year wide receiver Wednesday, just one year into a five-year, $16.5 million deal.

But he's pretty popular with other NFL teams' coaching staffs. Jones was immediately offered three interviews with other NFL ball clubs, one of whom happens to be the Oakland Raiders football organization.

Matt Barrows has the goods on his Sacramento Bee 49ers blog. "Jones is visiting the Seahawks (Thursday), according to his agent, and the Vikings are interested in bringing him in tonight. The Raiders and Titans are among five additional teams who have shown interest," Barrows writes.

Barrows clarifies the itinerary later via his Twitter: "Vikings tomorrow, Raiders Sunday. Titans, Rams also interested."

49ers fans have to be scratching their heads at this. They guy had one reception all last season. One.

You see that catch he's running with in the picture above? That's his entire 49er career. He got $5.4 million for that.

But Jones is only one year removed from a 2008 season wherein Jones started all 16 games and grabbed 41 catches for 449 yards. Over the past two seasons, only Zach Miller and Louis Murphy have had that kind of yardage for the Raiders.

Should Jones end up with the Raiders, he'd get to play against the team that just cut him. Two times.

The Raiders face the 49ers in the annual preseason Battle of the Bay on Aug. 28, and in the regular season on Oct. 17.

Joe Kukura is a freelance writer who would not advise Brandon Jones to go back to the Titans and play alongside LeGarrette Blount.
