Surfers Prepare On Peninsula For Mavericks

The window for the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational in San Mateo County will open on Nov. 9 and run through March 31, 2013. In that window, organizers can call for the contest to start at anytime. Organizers say they do not just look at satellites to determine the start of the contest, but use a blend of art, science and experience.

When an announcement is made, the 24 best big-wave surfers in the world have 24 hours to get to Pillar Point for the competition.

The Mavericks Big Wave Invitational has been canceled the past two years because conditions have not been right. The last time it happened was in Feb. 2010, when rouge waves crashed on shore, injuring several spectators.

That prompted organizers to implement new safety measures. People will not be able to watch the competition from Pillar Point anymore. The nearby beaches and bluffs will also be closed.

Instead, there will be a Mavericks festival located on the grounds of the Oceano Hotel and Harbor Village. Guests will be able to watch the contest via satellite and enjoy food and music. Tickets cost $10 per person.
