New Raider Leads NFL in Sacks

It may be folly to freak out over preseason NFL statistics. But in the waning days of August, preseason NFL statistics are the only thing we have over which to freak out.

To that end, Raider Nation can't help but be a little excited that one of the newest Oakland Raiders is leading the NFL right now in sacks.

After two whole games that do not count, Raiders' defensive end Kamerion Wimbley has 4.0 sacks to his credit -- tops in the NFL. Wimbley was acquired in the off-season from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a third-round draft pick.

Wimbley scored all four of these sacks in Saturday night's 32-17 win over the Chicago Bears. In fact, they were all in the first half.

"I got one early and I was energized," Wimbley told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I was able to use some successful moves one-on-one, and I came free. I have never had four sacks in a half before."

But he'll try again Saturday night at 6 p.m. PDT, when the Raiders square off against the San Francisco 49ers at the Oakland Coliseum for their third preseason game.

Joe Kukura is a freelance writer would point out that even Luke McCown can lead the NFL in something in the second week of the exhibition season.
