Phil Simms Can't Call Raiders-Chargers

It's a rare privilege for an Oakland Raiders fan whose games are often not even on television in the first place -- this weekend's Raiders-Chargers game is the top game in the afternoon late-game slot, and the network is sending their top TV announcing team to cover the game.

Normally, the top announcing team for the AFC in the broadcast booth is the bland-but-competent combination of Jim Nantz and Phil Simms. But Simms has to miss Sunday's game while recovering from back surgery, the Wall Street Journal reports.

In Simms' place, we'll get former Monday Night Football analyst Dan Fouts. Yes, the same Dan Fouts who played quarterback for these very San Diego Chargers for 14 seasons.

From the Raiders' perspective, it could be worse. They could have ex-Raider Rich Gannon calling the game.

Joe Kukura is a freelance writer who didn't realize until just now that Dan Fouts went to Marin Catholic High School.
