Raiders Come Close but Fall Again

Penalty, interception ensure a loss in New England and an 0-3 start to season

The Raiders made the Patriots sweat and win No. 1 was there for the taking.

New England had just a 10-9 lead late in the third quarter, and Oakland had its chances in the fourth quarter to take the game, but couldn’t execute, especially defensively on third down. With the game still very much in doubt and the Patriots holding a 13-9 lead in the fourth quarter, Tom Brady and the New England offense were able to convert crucial first downs en route to a field goal and a 16-9 lead with 6:20 remaining.

Then, on the Raiders’ next possession, facing third-and-9, quarterback Derek Carr -- who played solid football Sunday, completing 21 or 34 throws for 174 yards  -- threw a pass far off target and Oakland had to punt.

When the Raiders then got the ball back, they drove for an apparent touchdown, but rookie guard Gabe Jackson was called for holding. Then, a final desperation pass from Carr was intercepted to seal the decision.

Now 0-3, the Raiders now face a long flight to England for Game No. 4 next Sunday.
