Raiders Say Cable Hanging by a Thread

Bombshell news out of Raiderland this weekend, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Oakland Raiders had actually managed to make up their minds on whether to fire or keep head coach Tom Cable.

No such luck, Raiders fans. The Raiders insisted Monday they still haven't figured out a thing.

"We don’t have anything to report yet,” Raiders senior executive told NFL.com. “We are continuing our process, and there are a lot of things to cover. It’s an ongoing process, and when we reach a conclusion and a resolution about how we are going to proceed, we will make an announcement."

ESPN's report claims this is a done deal, Tom Cable is definitely returning, and the Raiders just haven't announced it yet.

"When Mr. Davis assessed the situation, he recognized that Tom Cable was popular in the locker room, had the support of his players, and did a good job this year in rallying the Raiders to a respectable record," Adam Schefter said on ESPN. "Of course, the Raiders have yet to acknowledge this news, and it may take a little while before they do."

Well, that report sounds definite. But if you had a nickel for every sportswriter this season who claimed to know for sure whether or not Tom Cable was getting fired, you'd be walking around with Nnamdi Asomugha kind of money.

Meanwhile, it's business in limbo as usual for Tom Cable. NBC Sports is reporting that Cable will still represent the Raiders at this weekend's Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.

But considering the runaround that the Raiders are giving him now, don't be surprised if Cable is circulating his resume during the game.

Joe Kukura is a freelance writer who hopes Tom Cable gets a chance to hit JaMarcus Russell's Mardi Gras party while he's in Mobile, Alabama.
