Stanford Cowbell Guy Alex Chang Drums Up National Attention Following Cardinal's “Sweet” Defeat of Kansas

After upsetting seventh-seeded New Mexico on Friday, the Stanford Cardinal did away with the 2-seed Kansas Jayhawks on Sunday.

But the real star for Stanford is not on the court. He’s on the sidelines: Stanford percussionist Alex Chang, who's from Los Altos, has become an overnight internet sensation, thanks to his enthusiastic cowbell bashing.

Chang said he was just doing what he always does.

"That's what we try to do as the Stanford band: entertain everyone who's watching," Chang said in an interview via Skype on Monday afternoon.

This Vine video of him playing the cowbell during Sunday’s game has gone viral:

The Stanford Alumni Network has retweeted the image.

And CBS Sports tweeted out, too.

SB Nation got in on the act…

In addition to a wave of internet commotion, Chang’s antics have inspired at least two Twitter handles: @StanfordCowbell and @cowbellstanford.

He will be in the stands on Monday afternoon in Ames, Iowa, when the Stanford women’s hoops team faces off against Florida State for the chance to go to the Sweet Sixteen in the women’s tourney. Tipoff is at 3:30 p.m.

The Stanford men’s team faces Dayton in the Sweet Sixteen on Thursday afternoon in Memphis.
