Born and raised in Syossett, New York, Sue Bird is one of the most decorated point guards in the history of women’s basketball. Bird was the 2002 Naismith Player of the Year and two-time NCAA champion at the University of Connecticut while playing for current Team USA coach Geno Auriemma. While playing for Auriemma at UConn, the standout point guard was named the 2002 Sportswoman of the Year by the Women’s Sports Foundation. Picked No. 1 overall in the 2002 WNBA Draft, Bird has led the Seattle Storm to two WNBA titles. A three-time gold medalist prior to the Rio Games, Bird is expected to retire from international play after the 2016 Olympics.
