Turner Construction, Builder of 49ers Stadium, to Build Downtown Sacramento Arena

Sports arenas in Northern California are old hat for firm

The same firm which built the new 49ers stadium in Santa Clara will also build a new basketball and concert arena in downtown Sacramento, according to reports.

Turner Construction was selected by the ownership of the Sacramento Kings to replace that team's aging Arco Arena in downtown Sacramento, according to the Sacramento Business Journal.

Experts think that Turner's experience building the $1.2 billion Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara -- "a very high-tech sports venue" -- led to its selection, the newspaper reported.

The arena will cost $450 million, with about half of the money to come from public funds like city real estate taxes and parking revenue, the newspaper reported.

Dale Koger, one of the principals of Turner Construction, says that his company has also built 15 buildings in and around where the new arena is to be located, the newspaper reported.

The arena project will begin shortly after the finishing touches are put on Levi's Stadium, which is scheduled to open for the 2014 football season.
