Less than a week ago, it looked like A's third baseman Matt Chapman would be the lone representative for Oakland at the 2019 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
We're happy to say that is no longer the case.
A's reliever Liam Hendriks now has been selected to his first All-Star team, MLB announced on Friday:
Hendriks will be a replacement for Tampa Bay's Charlie Morton, who is scheduled to pitch Sunday and therefore ineligible for the game. But Hendrick's recent numbers speak for themselves.
The 30-year-old is 3-0 with three saves and a 1.29 ERA with 60 strikeouts in 40 games. Hendriks has a league-leading 0.96 ERA among relievers with 58 strikeouts and has held opposing batters to a .193 average.
Hendriks is also coming off of an AL Reliever of the Month honor for June, when he went 1-0 with two saves and a 0.60 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 14 relief appearances.
Oh, and then there is this:
Hell of a last year or so for Liam Hendriks.
6/25/18: DFA (for Edwin Jackson!)
7/2/18: Sent to AAA
10/3/18: Starts AL WC game!
7/5/19: Named AL All-Star!!— Mike Petriello (@mike_petriello) July 5, 2019
When Chapman was selected as an All-Star, he told the media he wished some of his teammates were joining him in the All-Star festivities -- he got his wish.
Congrats to Hendriks on his selection.
The 90th Midsummer Classic will be held on Tuesday, July 9 on FOX Sports at Progressive Field.
