The investigation into the assault of a Giants fan on opening day at Dodger Stadium has been reassigned to the LAPD Robbery-Homicide Division.

Officers and detectives at the Northeast Station had coordinated the investigation and put in  hundreds of hours of overtime into making the May 22 arrest of Giovanni Ramirez.

The robbery-homicide division typically handles high-profile cases, such as the death of Michael Jackson, the Black Dahlia murder, the O.J. Simpson case and the Grim Sleeper slayings. The special unit brings more resources to the investigation, and police said the demands of the case have become more complex.

Ramirez, 31, is the only person arrested in the case. He remains jailed on a parole hold, and another parole hearing is scheduled for June 20.

Attorneys for Ramirez claim he was nowhere near Dodger Stadium at the time of the attack on Bryan Stow. Earlier this week, a judge ordered that the LAPD maintain all video connected to the case.

The ruling came after a request from Ramirez's attorneys, who said they believe video from a Hollywood hotel will exonerate Ramirez. The attorneys contend that Ramirez and his girlfriend stayed at a Comfort Inn in Hollywood on April 1 -- one day after Stow was attacked in the Dodger Stadium parking lot.

Ramirez's attorneys said he had a full head of hair on that day. Police sketches released April 1 showed two subjects with shaved heads.

"The defense attorney has to do what his job is, which is to make sure that I do my job," LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said Friday. "I'm assuring you that I will."

Stow remains in a coma at a San Francisco hospital.
