Bruce Bochy Says He Would ‘love to Have One More Shot'

SAN FRANCISCO -- A few minutes after he announced his retirement back in early February, Bruce Bochy opened the door a crack. Asked if he could commit to never managing again, Bochy paused for a moment and then replied, "Never is a big word."

On Thursday, less than a month into his first free offseason, Bochy pushed that door open a few inches more. During an appearance on Mad Dog Sports Radio, host Chris Russo predicted to Bochy that he would manage again after a year off.

"No, no, I'm with you, I'm with you," Bochy said. "I'm just hitting the pause button. That's all. I'm taking a little sabbatical here for a year and then I'll see where I'm at. I don't know how I'm going to feel but I'd love to have one more shot."

Bochy had talked about that with friends in recent months, but publicly, he had been careful to not talk about coming back. The expectation among many close to him, though, has always been that Bochy would return to managing at some point. It's in his blood, and he's simply too competitive to sit at home and watch for too long.

Bochy's contract came to an end this season and his announcement before the season allowed both sides to have a clean exit, with the Giants quickly moving on this month to a search for a new manager. It's possible that choice will go up against Bochy as soon as 2021 if the right opportunity is there, although one obvious hole filled earlier Thursday when the Padres chose Jayce Tingler as their replacement for Andy Green.

Bochy will serve in a front office role for the Giants next season.
