Could Giants Still Contend for Wild Card?

OK, the timing of the suggestion that the Giants could sneak into the Wild Card race is probably poor, given that it's impossibly far from even being likely that the Giants make the playoffs in 2011.

In fact, even after last night's home-run-party of a victory over the Padres, the Giants have just a 0.2 percent chance of winning their division. That is, however, not as high as the chance that the Giants make the Wild Card race, which, according to, is 0.6 percent.

In the words of Lloyd Christmas ... So you're telling me there's a chance?!?!

Eh. No there is not much of a chance. The Giants are currently 6.5 games back of the Atlanta Braves for the Wild Card, and that's with only 15 games remaining.

Yes, the Braves have lost four-straight games and yes, they are reeling like they haven't reeled all season. And sure, the Giants have won two-straight games and are playing the Padres for two more, which has been a good thing lately.

But there's also the matter of the St. Louis Cardinals, who, despite losing on Monday night, remain two games up on the Giants (and thus 4.5 games back of the Braves) in the Wild Card race.

Could the Giants run the table and make the playoffs? Theoretically, yes ... yes they could.

But there's a reason why the Braves have a 93.9 percent chance of winning the Wild Card at this stage: they're up around five games with only 15 to play.

It's hope in a hopeless world.
