49ers' Reid Explains Reasoning for Taking Knee During Anthem

San Francisco 49ers safety Eric Reid was the first player to join Colin Kaepernick in his protest against social injustice by kneeling alongside him during the national anthem in the team's final exhibition game.

Reid after the game explained his reasoning, saying, "The goal is to keep the dialogue open," Reid said. "There are issues in this country that a lot of people feel strongly about. And the goal is just to fix those issues, to make progress on those issues."

He added to that message Saturday, two days before the 49ers' 2016 season opener against the Rams:

Reid, a four-year veteran, was voted as the 49ers' player representative for the NFL Players Association. The 24-year-old LSU product was a first-round draft pick in 2013.
