Chip Kelly: We Need Joe Staley Here

SANTA CLARA – Coach Chip Kelly said Monday he has never had a conversation with general manager Trent Baalke about trading five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Staley.

“No one’s ever talked to me, (had) discussions with me about Joe being traded,” Kelly said. “We need Joe here.

“I’m not in charge of the overall roster. I’ll give my weigh in and weigh in where everybody is. But my point to that thing is we’ve never had a conversation about that, and we talk about everything on a daily basis. That’s never come up.”

Pro Football Talk on Sunday night reported the 49ers are seeking a first-round draft pick for Staley. According to the report, the list of interested teams include the Vikings, Giants, Cardinals, Seahawks and Patriots.

The trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 1. The 49ers players report back to Santa Clara on that day after the bye week.

“And I understand how it comes up because we’re 1-6 and Joe’s a veteran player,” said Kelly. “It’s just kind of the nature of the sport you play.”

When asked if Kelly spoke to Staley on Monday to assure him that there has been no trade talk, Kelly answered, “I don’t make a habit about talking to our guys about erroneous reports.”

Staley is under contract to the 49ers through the 2019 season.
