Cosell: Kaepernick Will Eventually Start Over Gabbert

Blaine Gabbert started the 49ers' first three games of the season, and Colin Kaepernick was his backup.

Is it time for Chip Kelly to make a change?

"It's a legitimate question," Greg Cosell said on KNBR 680 on Wednesday morning. "There's no answer to that because we're not there every day and they have to decide that.

"But I think I said to you before the season started that I said Kaepernick will play this year, and will start this year, and I still believe that."

Gabbert and Kaepernick entered training camp in an open competition.

Arm fatigue prevented Kaepernick from suiting up for the first two exhibition games, and Gabbert eventually was named the Week 1 starter.

On Monday, Chip Kelly declared: "I don't think Kap is 100 percent right now. I don't think he's ready to go full-time. He's continuing to work on it. I think he's over there right now. And, Kap will be the first to tell you, if you guys have been around here before, I think his playing weight has been around 225 and he's not at that right now.

"So he's going out there and continuing to work, continuing to get better. He had a serious layoff in times in terms of being able to medical rehab. To get the full Kap for what you need, the potential that he has, he needs to continue to just work on the physical aspect of things."

Kaepernick responded on Tuesday.

"I'm always ready to step on that field and put it on the line for my team," Kaepernick said. ""I think it's the fact that my weight isn't where it was. My strength is still growing, developing. But, once again, I'm always going to be prepared, always ready to put it on the line for this team."
