NFL Scout: Kaepernick ‘going to Kill It' in Kelly's System

The 49ers started quarterback Blaine Gabbert to kick off the Chip Kelly era in San Francisco.

They didn't get the results they were looking for.

Over five games, the team went 1-4, with four consecutive losses, as Gabbert tossed five touchdowns and six picks.

His 69.6 QB rating ranked 30th out of 31 qualified passers, with only Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and his 10 interceptions lower.

Kelly on Tuesday decided a change was needed and named Colin Kaepernick the starting quarterback of the 49ers once again.

And one NFL scout believes this is the right move.

"Oh, I think he's going to kill it," an anonymous NFC scout told Bucky Brooks of NFL.com. "He's in the perfect system for his skill set. ... I would expect him to do well under Chip.

"He gives Chip [Kelly] a Marcus Mariota-type playmaker," the scout added. "He is not as smooth or fluid, but he is dynamic and explosive with the ball in his hands. He is a much different point man than we've seen run his stuff [in Kelly's NFL days]."

Kaepernick hasn't started a game since November 1, 2015, which was a 27-6 loss to the Rams.

Kaepernick in that game completed 20 of 41 attempts for 162 passing yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions.

The 49ers’ offense ranks 31st in the NFL in total yards. The 49ers are last in the league in yards per play.

“We need to move the football offensively,” Kelly told reporters. “So that’s why we made the decision to do what we’re doing. So, hopefully, we can get a little more consistency on the offensive side of the ball. That’s what we need.”
