Palmer in Concussion Protocol; Arians Calls QB's Wife to Get Truth

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer’s availability for Thursday’s game against the 49ers remains in question after he sustained a concussion in his team’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

“Just left the meeting with him and he looked good,” Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said Tuesday morning on a conference call with Bay Area reporters. “So we’ll wait and see. Got to go through the protocol.”

When asked if there is enough time for Palmer to make it through the return-to-play protocol for Thursday’s game, Arians answered, “Uh, I think there’s a chance, yes.”

Arians said he spoke Sunday night to Palmer’s wife, Shaelyn, after her husband exited the game late in the fourth quarter with the head injury.

“I wanted to see how she was doing, also,” Arians said. “You get more information from a wife that you ever get from a player, that’s for sure.

“You’re not going to get the real truth from a football player. He’s always going to tell you he’s ready and he’s OK. I was counting on her to tell me what it's really like.”

The Cardinals were expected to promote quarterback Zac Dysert from the practice squad. If Palmer is unable to play, Drew Stanton would get his 12th career start. He last started for the Cardinals in 2014, when he took over for eight games while Palmer was out with a knee injury.

“He’s done it,” Arians said. “He was 5-3 as our starter when Carson was hurt. I thought he played extremely well. We don’t change anything we do. He’s extremely knowledgeable in the offense. I feel very comfortable with him in there.”
